World Happiest Countries: Finland has once again been ranked as the happiest country in the world.
That is according to the annual report about World Happiest Countries, commemorating the United Nations International Day of Happiness on March 20.
The report is based on global survey data from people in over 140 countries. Countries are evaluated on happiness based on their average life ratings during the previous three years, in this example, 2021-2023.
The report is a collaboration between Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Study Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Goals Solutions Network, and an editorial board.
How is Happiness Ranked?
The happiness ranking for World Happiest Countries, is based on people’s self-reported life satisfaction, as well as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption.
Finland, which is counted as the world’s happiest countries, a cool-weather country where the northern lights dance in winter and the summer sun can shine all night, has a lot figured out when it comes to the ideal social conditions for happiness.
According to John Helliwell, an emeritus professor of economics at the Vancouver School of Economics, University of British Columbia, and a founding editor of the World Happiness Report, the poll asks each participant to rate their life as a whole, taking into account their values.
“And you find out Finland’s pretty rich in all of those things like wallets being returned if they’re dropped in the street, people helping each other day in and day out, excellent and generally distributed health and education possibilities — so everyone essentially comes out of the beginning feeling the same,” he went on to say.
He also noted that Finland has happy immigrants, “so it’s something that they’re prepared to share with newcomers.”
