One of the finest directors of all time has finally disclosed his long-held passion project.

According to accounts, Universal’s Donna Langley and Sony’s Tom Rothman were among the studio executives who interacted with Darren Aronofsky, Roger Corman, Al Pacino, Nicolas Cage, and Andy Garcia in a gathering of more than 300 at Universal CityWalk’s Imax theatre.
The epic drama stars Adam Driver as Caesar, a determined architect working to reconstruct a large metropolis who falls in love with Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), the daughter of rival Mayor Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito).
Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, and Shia LaBeouf also star, with Laurence Fishburne narrating the film, which is believed to last about two hours and 13 minutes (excluding credits).
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Is a Moment in cinematic History
Francis Ford Coppola screened Megalopolis at the Universal CityWalk IMAX Theater in Los Angeles for a slew of potential buyers and distributors, as well as a star-studded audience of fellow filmmakers including Andy Garcia, Pacino, Colleen Camp, Talia Shire, Nicolas Cage, Angelica Huston, Spike Jonze, Jon Favreau, Darren Aronofsky, Cailee Spaeny, and Roger Corman.
Megalopolis has been in the works for 20 years, and little is known about it (as stated in Deadline’s story) is that Francis Ford Coppola hasn’t toned down his fastball. Coppola’s newest is about contrasting ideas of the namesake city’s future following a disaster, which presents an opportunity for inspired renovation or business-as-usual stagnation.
Cesar (Adam Driver), an architectural enthusiast, envisions reconstructing the city with recyclable resources and creating a modern utopia. His dream-big demeanor and trust in human creativity and potential mirrors that of the director.
His opponent is Mayor Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who wants to rebuild the city using the same old tactics, such as graft and corruption, resulting in even greater unfairness and pollution while ultimately capitalizing on the worst aspects of human nature.
Caught between them is the mayor’s daughter, Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), a woman used to power players battling for supremacy who is yearning for something genuine in her life.
Deadline first reported on the screening, stating that Coppola’s lawyer, Barry Hirsch, who also worked as a producer, will assist the filmmaker in finding a distribution partner. Coppola sold a portion of his vineyard to fund the development.
Megalopolis appears in Screen’s Cannes 2024: What’s In The Running? A Croisette spot is rumored to be in the works if a deal is struck soon.
If that does not happen quickly, the picture is expected to appear in a big festival later this year, such as Venice, Telluride, Toronto, or the New York Picture Festival.
Most recent film of Francis Ford Coppola as a filmmaker was the 2016 coming-of-age drama Distant Vision. Before that, he released a feature film every two years for four years, beginning with the fantasy horror Twixt in 2011, followed by the drama Tetro in 2009 and the mystery Youth Without Youth in 2007.
Conclusion
Francis Ford Coppola made announcement of his passion project, “Megalopolis,” is a watershed moment in cinematic history. With a star-studded premiere and decades of expectation, Coppola’s imaginative storytelling is sure to enchant audiences around the world.
As the picture seeks distribution, its potential to appear at prominent festivals reinforces Coppola’s lasting legacy as a master filmmaker.
