Joker 2 poster features Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga

Todd Phillips’ Joker was a huge success, and Joaquin Phoenix will reprise the role that garnered him an Oscar in Joker: Folie à Deux. Warner Bros. has released the first official poster for the upcoming DC Elseworlds film, which stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.  

The first official poster, titled “The World Is a Stage,” shows Phoenix’s Joker affectionately staring down at Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn as they hug and dance. 

Joker 2 poster also show that he clutches a cigarette, and Harley Quinn’s makeup is entirely destroyed. The article also revealed the date of the first teaser, which would be posted on April 9.

Todd Phillips returned to direct the sequel to his Academy Award-winning hit, which finds the Joker navigating a romance with Gaga as notorious villain (and alleged Arkham Asylum doctor) Harley Quinn. The film is said to have musical aspects, as Phoenix and Gaga were seen filming outside sequences in early 2023 that included song-and-dance routines.

The new image shows Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, in a traditional ballroom dancing stance with his love interest, Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. The two are dressed formally, in black tuxedos and white gowns, respectively. They are dressed in clown makeup and have grave expressions for a change.  

Joker 2 Will Be a Musical

The first film premiered in 2019 and was a huge success. The film grossed $335.4 million domestically, but it surpassed the $1 billion mark internationally, collecting $728.6 million from foreign territories. The film earned $56.9 million in home market income, including VOD, DVD, and Blu-Ray sales (source: The Numbers).  

Joker 2 poster: On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the film a 69% rating. Fans were even more enthusiastic about the DC Elseworlds film, which garnered an audience approval rating of 88%. After getting 11 Academy Award nominations, Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor in a Leading Role and Original Score. 

Phillips’ Joker was supposed to be a standalone feature, but its surprising critical success spurred a sequel. Warner Bros. confirmed the sequel in November 2019. The Joker sequel, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, will be musical.

Described as a “jukebox musical,” the film based on the renowned villain will feature well-known songs performed by the main protagonists, Joker and Harley Quinn. There will supposedly be at least 15 covers.  

Joker 2 poster: bigger budget than the first

The intended sequel has a greater budget than the first. Given that the last film grossed $1 billion, fans are excited about the upcoming sequel. As a result, DC Elseworlds has gone all in.

The last film’s budget was estimated to be between $55 million and $70 million, whereas the next will be significantly greater, costing more than $200 million. Joaquin Phoenix is expected to receive $20 million for reprising his role as Arthur Fleck/the Joker, while Lady Gaga will receive $12 million for her part as Harley Quinn.
