Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam presided over an administrative meeting that discussed agricultural difficulties. Highlights modern irrigation for conserving water while allocating cash for research and farm mechanization.
Despite criticism, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, continue to chair administrative sessions together.
On Monday, Mr Sharif co-chaired a meeting to discuss difficulties facing the province’s agriculture sector.
Since the February 8 general elections, the PML-N supreme leader has maintained a quiet profile. However, in his infrequent public appearances since then, he has been seen chairing or co-chairing administrative sessions of the Punjab administration alongside his daughter.
This has raised concerns, given Mr Sharif has no official position in either the provincial or federal governments, and is merely a member of the National Assembly.
Nawaz Sharif Remain active in administrative affairs
Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, remains unfazed by criticism and continues to play an active role in administrative activities, recently chairing a meeting alongside his daughter and Punjab provincial chief minister, Maryam Nawaz.
The conference on Monday aimed to discuss concerns plaguing the province’s agriculture industry, according to Dawn newspaper on Tuesday.
Attending the discussion on Monday, the PML-N supreme leader stated that the lack of availability of excellent seeds even after decades is “a matter of grave concern”.
He advocated for “effective steps” to prevent thirty-seven million acres feet (MAF) of water from going to waste during farming operations in the province.
Nawaz Sharif emphasized modern irrigation to save water
Nawaz Sharif underlined the importance of using advanced irrigation systems to save water. The gathering was informed that paving 7,300 water channels across Punjab might save 1.7 million m³ of water.
The meeting also discussed how to raise the percentage of farm mechanization in Punjab from 35 to 60 percent.
It also addressed the issuance of a Rs150 billion loan to farmers for Rabi and Kharif crops. Mr Sharif issued directives to develop easy eligibility requirements for farmers seeking loans.
CM Maryam also approved a Rs500 million research endowment fund for the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute in Faisalabad. The meeting also resolved to alter the Fertiliser and Pesticide Act.
The conference was attended by Provincial Ministers Marriyum Aurangzeb, Azma Zahid Bukhari, and Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, as well as PML-N leader Pervaiz Rashid and other officials.
Separately, on Monday, CM Maryam hosted a joint meeting of the PML-N, PPP, and PML-Q legislative parties to discuss Senate election strategy.
PPP parliamentary party leader Ali Haider Gilani guaranteed the CM of his party’s support for PML-N nominees Bushra Butt and Anusha Rahman, who are running for women’s seats.
