Headline: Lahore Walton Airport faces corruption allegations; discussion arises over reactions, while Federal Cabinet’s action raises concerns.
An aviation industry association has unearthed a serious corruption issue concerning the selling of land at Lahore’s Walton International Airport.
The Aircraft Owners & Operators Association (AOOA) Pakistan revealed in a letter to Federal Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif that land at Walton Airport, worth Rs350 billion, was illegally sold in exchange for agricultural property at Mureedke and Rs50 billion.
PCAA Responses to Allegations Regarding Lahore Walton Airport Leadership
The current letter/communication from the so-called/self-proclaimed Aircraft Owners and Operators Association appears to be yet another frantic attempt to malign the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s (PCAA) leadership, according to a PCAA spokeswoman.
Wing Commander (Retd) Muhammad Nawaz Asim, General Secretary of AOOA Pakistan, said in the letter that the sale violated the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) laws and regulations.
Asim went on to state that only Rs1 billion of the Rs50 billion transaction was deposited in the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s (PCAA) accounts. He accused land mafias of damaging the historic airport in conjunction with the CAA’s Director-General and officials.
Call for NAB Investigation: Asim Demands Probe into Lahore Walton Airport Scandal
Lahore Walton Airport: Action on Corruption: Asim emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive investigation by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and court involvement, citing the controversy as evidence of CAA officials’ misbehavior, which is harmful to Pakistan’s aviation industry.
He expressed concern about the identity of those who benefited from the property sale agreement and urged for the identification of those who enabled such malfeasance.
The shutdown of Lahore’s Walton Airport, where Quaid-e-Azam landed in 1947, was reported. The CAA has declared its permanent shutdown in 2021, with plans to build a commercial hub in its place.
However, a Lahore High Court judgment directed that flight operations at the Lahore Flying Club, Walton Airport, be resumed, pending a report on the relocation of the airport and related infrastructure.
Federal Cabinet Decision: Transferring Walton Aerodrome Land for Public Safety
Lahore Walton Airport: The author of this letter is attempting to dupe people into accepting his fabricated account, with some obvious malafide and nasty intentions. The Federal Government decided to relocate aviation activities from Walton Aerodrome in 2021 due to major safety issues to a more suitable location, with the land given to the Government of Punjab for commercial interests.
The Federal Cabinet took its decision based on the authority afforded by the Civil Aviation Ordinance of 1960, which allows the government to prioritize public safety.
The relocation was necessitated by the growing risks associated with aviation activity near Walton Aerodrome, given the presence of substantial commercial and residential districts.
Lahore Walton Airport: The land at Walton Aerodrome was given to the Govt. of Punjab (GoPb) / Lahore Central Business District Development Authority (LCBDDA), later renamed Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA), through a revenue sharing agreement between the Civil Aviation Authority and the Government of Punjab, per a Federal Cabinet decision.
