Oh II-nam, 79-year-old actor known for the Squid Game series, received a suspended prison sentence.
Actor O Yeong-su, from South Korea, was found guilty on Friday. He was accused of sexual harassment charges and given a suspended prison sentence. Yeong-su starred in the first season of the popular Netflix comedy Squid Game.
According to a court official over the phone, O was sentenced to eight months in prison. He is suspended for two years, and 40 hours of attendance at a sexual violence treatment programme by the Seongnam branch of the Suwon district court.
The 79-year-old actor refuted the claims after being accused of two instances of sexual harassment in 2017.
In 2017, the Golden Globe-winning actor was found guilty of twice abusing the actress at different times. At the time, the two were on tour for a play in which they collaborated. The actress claimed he made inappropriate physical contact with her both outside her house and during the tour.
Judge Jeong Yeon-ju declared Yeong-su guilty, stating that the victim’s testimony was “consistent…and appear to be statements that cannot be made without actually experiencing them.”
Court documents state that the two events happened in 2017 while the actor was staying in rural locations for his theatre performance—on a walking route and in front of the victim’s home, respectively.
Shortly after the sentencing, Womenlink, a well-known feminist organisation, told reporters, “Now we can say that the sexual violence in the theatre is not an old custom but sexual violence.” The accused needs to own his error, apologise to the victim, and give up trying to make his attack go away.”
