In a series of posts on X, the Kerala Congress unit tagged WhatsApp’s parent firm Meta. It linked to an automated message from a certified business account named Viksit Bharat Sampark WhatsApp Message.

Viksit Bharat Sampark WhatsApp Message soliciting citizen opinion and suggestions, along with a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has generated a scandal, with opposition leaders accusing the government of using the messaging service and databases to spread political propaganda. 

“The message discusses taking responses from citizens, but the linked PDF contains nothing but political propaganda,” claimed the Kerala Congress.

In the letter, published on the eve of the announcement of the general elections, the PM said: “I need and indeed, look forward to your ideas, suggestions, and backing as we work to fulfill the resolve to create a Viksit Bharat.”

The opposition leaders labeled this an abuse of government resources and accused Prime Minister Modi of exploiting it as a campaign weapon for the 2019 General Elections.

Early in February, the president of the BJP, JP Nadda, launched the ‘Viksit Bharat Modi ki guarantee’ campaign, which used video vans to collect recommendations from people around the country for the party’s agenda in the 2018 Lok Sabha elections.
