A court in Pakistan has postponed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s prison term in a case involving the illegal sale of state gifts.
Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were each sentenced to 14 years in prison on January 31, only a week before the February 8 elections, which Khan’s party claims were rigged.
Islamabad High Court Suspended Imran Khan and His wife’s Sentence
The Islamabad High Court announced on Monday that the couple’s punishment will be deferred until a decision is made on the matter after the Eid vacations, which begin in 10 days.
Imran Khan, 71, is accused of failing to disclose assets derived from the sale of state gifts totaling more than 140 million rupees ($504,000) obtained during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to April 2022.
The complaint was filed by Pakistan’s anti-corruption agency, which accused Khan and his wife of illegally purchasing and selling presents.
The sentence barred the pair from running for public office for ten years and imposed a fine of 787 million rupees ($2.8 million) on each of them.
imran Khan, the founder of the main opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been in jail since August of last year on several allegations.
The conviction in the state gifts case came just one day after the cricketer-turned-politician was sentenced to ten years in prison for disclosing state secrets.
The judge also banned the former prime minister for ten years and fined the couple Rs1.57 billion (Rs787 million each).
Imran Khan Statement: his wife had nothing to do with the case
Khan informed the court that his wife had nothing to do with the case and was being humiliated by being coerced into it.
During the hearing, IHC CJ Farooq stated that the cipher case would be concluded within a few days. “Also, we are unable to fix the matter involving Toshakhana for hearing the very next day after holding a hearing on it today.”
He stated that the cipher case was scheduled for hearing the next day.
The judge stated that arguments from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had to begin in the cipher case, and he did not know how long it would take. As a result, the Toshakhana case has been postponed until after Eid.
On February 1, the pair were sentenced to seven years each in prison for their illicit marriage. On January 30, a court sentenced Khan and PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi to ten years in prison for the cipher case.
All of these back-to-back rulings were issued against Khan just days before the February 8 general election.
Conclusion
Prison sentence of Imran Khan for illegally selling state gifts has been delayed pending a further court ruling after Eid. The former Prime Minister denies involvement, stating that his wife has been unfairly maligned. These judicial disputes overlap with claims surrounding Pakistan’s general election..
