Adrian Newey, the legendary Formula One designer, has announced his departure from Red Bull after two decades.
Adrian Newey, one of Formula One’s most recognized designers, will leave Red Bull next year.
The team revealed that the 65-year-old Briton, regarded as the mastermind behind their extraordinary dominance of the sport, will complete his two-decade tenure in the “first quarter of 2025”.
Ferrari – set to be joined by Lewis Hamilton – are in pole position to sign him, and Newey’s exit puts additional pressure on Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.
Adrian Newey Bids Farewell: Thoughts on Two Decades of Innovation
Horner was cleared of allegations of misbehavior against a female employee in February, and she has filed an appeal.
It is understood that Newey became dissatisfied with his position on the team as a result of the controversy surrounding the defending world champions.
“For almost two decades it has been my great honour to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from upstart newcomer to multiple title-winning Team,” Newey said in a statement. “However, I feel now is an opportune moment to hand that baton over to others and to seek new challenges for myself.”
Newey has been with Red Bull since 2006, a year after the team was established. Since then, he has created cars that have won seven drivers’ titles, six constructors’ championships for Red Bull, and championships for Williams and McLaren.
“All of our greatest performances from the past 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand on the technical tiller,” Horner went on to say. “His vision and brilliance helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons. For me, Adrian Newey was already a superstar designer when he joined Red Bull. Two decades and thirteen championships later, he is remembered as a great legend.”
The Final Stage of an Era: Adrian Newey’s Influence on Formula One
Newey, who is set to attend this weekend’s race in Miami, stated: “I’ve wanted to be a fast car designer since I was a small lad. My dream was to be a Formula One engineer, and I’ve been fortunate enough to make that dream come true.
“For nearly two decades, it has been my great honor to play a major role in Red Bull Racing’s evolution from plucky newcomer to multiple title-winning outfit. The last stages of RB17 development are approaching, therefore my focus for the remaining of my time with the company will be on that.”
Adrian Newey’s Coming Chapter: Speculations and Legacy in Formula One
While Newey will remain with the Red Bull Technology Group until the first quarter of 2025, it is unclear what he plans to do after that.
According to reports, Ferrari, who have secured Lewis Hamilton to drive for them starting next season, are the favourites, with Aston Martin also mentioned as a potential destination.
What is undeniable is Newey’s Formula One heritage, having helped build no fewer than 12 constructors’ winning cars during his tenure. Wherever he ends up, he will undoubtedly be a significant asset.
